PURPOSE: To provide the students, faculty, administration, parents, and surrounding community with support during and after times of crisis that impact Warner Public School.

 

  • Crisis Event: Situational crisis may occur which brings about stress and anxiety for both student and staff members. Such an event requires preparing to support the physical and emotional stress encountered by these people.

  • Media Liaison (Spokesperson): The designated spokesperson for Warner Public School will be the Superintendent or the Superintendent’s designee.

FIRE

  • Follow procedures practiced during fire drills.

  • Monitors are named for each building.

  • Students must not be released except to parents and guardians and must be signed out. * SEE EMERGENCY NUMBERS

  • Maps are placed in each classroom. Students/Staff must go to designated point.


 

 

DEATH

  • Crisis team members, counselors, and clergy should be contacted by administration and a meeting will be held to determine plan for assistance.

  • Counselor and building administrator will prepare faculty on how to tell students and will designate a place for counselors.


 

 

TORNADO/EARTHQUAKE

  • Building principal or designee will inform staff of condition or potential condition.

  • If severe weather strikes during school day, contain all students in classroom or move to designated shelter access.

  • Lock all doors except one and assign a staff member to monitor and direct late arrivals.

  • Move all students away from windows, doors, etc.

  • In the event of an earthquake, get away from wide-span ceilings, get up against walls as quick as possible.

  • Take roll and report missing students.

  • Wait for instructions or ALL CLEAR from officials.

If severe inclement weather occurs outside of the school day, an all call will be made using our notification system. Staff members should also watch for notice of school closing on channel 2, 6, or 8. Upon returning to school, building sidewalks should be clear of ice/snow/debris.


 

 

STUDENT BODY CONFLICT

  • Call or send for assistance. Use the intercom or walkie-talkie.

  • Do not rush into the altercation.

  • Announce your presence.

  • Call the student(s) name.

  • Give choices (Would you like to go to the office? Stop now and get into less trouble.)

  • Ask/tell the students to stop.

  • Try humor

  • Do not invade the student’s personal space unless you have to prevent bodily injury to another student.

  • Remove the AUDIENCE.

  • Whichever staff member knows the student best should talk to him/her.


 

 


 

 

FIREARMS OR WEAPONS

  • NOTIFY BUILDING PRINCIPAL IMMEDIATELY

  • The principal or designees shall:

    • Verify Information

    • Proceed with CODE RED LOCK DOWN

    • Contact the police.

    • Notify the Superintendent of schools or his designees.

    • Cooperate fully with the police.

    • Notify the parent of the student in possession of the weapon.

    • Transfer the confiscated weapon to the police department.


 

 

BOMB THREATS

  • If the bomb threat is delivered on the telephone, the staff member should:

      • Keep the caller on the line as long as possible.

      • Listen for characteristics of the caller and for the background noise.

      • Ask: Where is the bomb? What does the bomb look like? Did you place the bomb? Why have you planted it? What is your name? What kind is it? What will cause it to explode? When will it go off? What are you addressing?

      • Write down all the information obtained, using as many exact words as possible. (Record caller if possible)

  • Notify principal

  • Principal will call for evacuation of the building. Staff should use the same procedure for evacuation as used in fire drill.


 

 

TRANSPORTATION RELATED CRISIS

  • Warner Public School will utilize a general permission slip for all field trips.

  • Bus drivers should follow rules and procedures developed by the State Department of Education.

  • A list of all students who ride a bus should be on file at the office and a list should be kept on each bus.

  • Students should not be allowed to leave the scene of an incident without a parent or guardian. The person taking the student should sign the student out.

  • The sponsor should carry authorization for medical treatment for each student on a field trip or athletic event.


 

 

LOCK DOWN

  1. Notify building principal immediately.

  2. We lock down as a district, therefore both sites will lock down.

    Remain in Classroom until situation is resolved.

    Move children away from doors and glass.

    If possible, administration will send email to keep you informed of situation.

    Take defensive positions until further guidance is provided.

  5. Anyone with a door lock responsibility will go immediately to their assigned doors and take the necessary steps to assure that they are secured.

  6. Students who are outside will be directed to go to the nearest building by any staff member who can see them. They are to remain in the designated location until an “all clear” signal is given.

  • Staff members should ask any visitor or stranger in building if he/she has checked in with the office. If not, members should direct the person to the office.

  • PROTECTIVE or RESTRAINING ORDERS NEED TO BE FILED IN THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE.

  • Visible signs stating that: ALL VISITORS MUST REPORT TO THE OFFICE should be posted.


 

 

SUICIDE PREVENTION

In the event of warning signs of a suicidal student or staff member, suicidal threat, suicide attempt, prolonged depression, dramatic change of behavior or personality, or the making of final arrangements, the severity of the level of the threat should be assessed by the principal and counselor.

 

  1. Notify the parents of the suicidal student or family members or staff members.

  2. Work with the family to secure the needs of the student, supervision, and services.

  3. Monitor the student or staff member and provide on-going assistance.

  4. Students should be encouraged to report all threats of suicide by others.
